When you decide to separate from your service, be sure to take advantage of the many transition services available to you and your spouse. Each service, along with the U.S. Department of Labor and Department of Veterans Affairs, offers free assistance.
To access information on military-to-civilian transition services, visit the U.S. Department of Defense's gateway transition site, which is available to all Active Duty and Guard/Reserve personnel and their families:
Here you'll find a transition services directory locator, downloadable transition guides, a resume builder, links to job fairs, a military-to-civilian skills translator, budget and spending planner, retirement calculator, summary of benefits, relocation planner, and much more.
Both you and your spouse can participate in the three- to four-day Transition Assistance Program (TAP) workshops offered on each base to servicemembers who are in the process of separating from the service. The workshops cover everything from assessing skills and setting goals to writing resumes, dressing for success, and developing effective job interview skills.
You will also receive a free copy of Carl S. Savino's and Ronald L. Krannich's annual 196-page transition book, "The Military-to-Civilian Transition Guide," which offers sound advice on how to make a successful transition to the civilian work world.
You will also want to get a copy of my 478-page companion book, Military Transition to Civilian Success, as well as frequently visit these useful military-to-civilian employment transition websites: |
